Foster Parent Training
In Nevada alone, 1,933 foster children were waiting to be adopted in 2008 (NACAC, 2009). Thousands of children, especially older children and those of color await for families to adopt them while living in an unstable environment. The intentions of foster care were suppose to be temporary, yet many Nevada children remain in care for years. Currently the average length of time to stay in care is 27.1 months (NACAC, 2009). However, older children are less likely to be adopted as younger children, in which research shows that children over the age of 9, the likelihood of them being adopted decreases significantly. In 2007, 207 children in Nevada aged out of foster care without a permanent home, in which research shows that many of these youth will face a considerable amount of obstacles in their future, including homelessness, unemployment, depression and substance abuse. As a result, scholars believe the superlative way of improving these outcomes is ensuring children don’t age out of care without a permanent support system (NACAC, 2009).
